Installation

New Tricks is a single binary, tricks, for macOS, Linux and Windows. Install it one of these ways, then run tricks doctor to check everything is in place.

  • git on your PATH. New Tricks shells out to your system git for everything, so it uses your git configuration and credential helpers.
  • GitHub credentials (recommended). Search, info and vendoring work anonymously for public repositories, but anonymous use is limited to 60 GitHub API requests an hour and skips GitHub code search. See GitHub credentials.
  • The GitHub CLI gh (optional). New Tricks borrows its token, and uses it to open pull requests for experiment merge --pr, publish --pr and contribute.

On macOS or Linux with Homebrew:

Terminal window
brew install new-tricks/tap/tricks

Check the installed version:

Terminal window
tricks --version
tricks 0.7.1

New Tricks borrows credentials and stores none. For the GitHub API it uses the first of:

  1. TRICKS_GITHUB_TOKEN, then GITHUB_TOKEN
  2. gh auth token --hostname <host>, which also covers GitHub Enterprise hosts
  3. In VS Code, the editor’s GitHub session, passed to the binary in memory
  4. Otherwise anonymous, read-only access to public sources

The simplest setup is to sign in to the GitHub CLI once:

Terminal window
gh auth login

A token needs the repo scope for private repositories, pull requests and publish targets, and read:org for the “your org” trust signal in search. Git operations (clone, fetch, push) go through your normal git credential helpers or SSH keys, not this token.

tricks doctor checks git, credentials, directories, agents and link health:

Terminal window
tricks doctor
New Tricks 0.7.1
✓ git git version 2.55.0
✓ gh GitHub CLI found
✓ github.com credentials token from `gh auth token`
✓ identity you (orgs: acme)
✓ API rate limit 4766/5000 remaining
✓ config ~/.config/newtricks
✓ data ~/Library/Application Support/newtricks
✓ store 0 revision(s)
✓ index 0 skill(s) indexed
✓ agent claude user ~/.claude/skills (not created yet), project .claude/skills; link mode; tested 2.1.280
✓ agent codex user ~/.agents/skills (not created yet), project .agents/skills; link mode; tested 0.140.0
✓ agent cursor user ~/.cursor/skills (not created yet), project .cursor/skills; link mode; tested 3.11.19
✓ agent copilot user ~/.copilot/skills (not created yet), project .github/skills; copy mode; tested VS Code 1.128.1
✓ operations no interrupted operations
✓ placements all healthy

Without credentials, the credentials line reads anonymous: public sources only, 60 API requests/hour, no GitHub code search. Run `gh auth login`. Once you have source repos, doctor also checks that each registered one still has its tricks.toml. The agent lines show where each agent’s skills go and whether links or copies are used; see Agents.

How you upgrade depends on how you installed:

Installed with Upgrade with
Homebrew brew upgrade tricks
VS Code extension Updating the extension updates its bundled binary
Cargo cargo install tricks --locked
Release binary or other standalone install tricks upgrade
From source git pull and cargo install --path . --locked again

tricks upgrade downloads the latest release for your platform from GitHub, verifies its SHA-256 checksum, and replaces the running binary in place. tricks upgrade --check only reports whether a newer release exists:

Terminal window
tricks upgrade --check
New Tricks 0.7.1 is up to date

tricks upgrade recognizes the other install methods and tells you what to do instead of overwriting a managed binary. For a Homebrew install it prints installed with Homebrew: run `brew upgrade tricks` ; for one in Cargo’s bin directory, installed with Cargo: run `cargo install tricks --locked` ; for the binary bundled with the extension, bundled with the VS Code extension: it updates with the extension.

What Where
User config: settings, catalogs, registered source repos ~/.config/newtricks/tricks.toml (%APPDATA%\newtricks\tricks.toml on Windows)
Data: store, upstream mirrors, publish clones, search index ~/Library/Application Support/newtricks (macOS), ~/.local/share/newtricks (Linux), %LOCALAPPDATA%\newtricks (Windows)

The user config is written on first run with the default settings and the recommended catalogs. Environment variables such as TRICKS_CONFIG_DIR and TRICKS_DATA_DIR move these locations. See the configuration reference for every file, key and variable.

Follow the quick start to create a source repo and test a skill with your agents.
